 What is a USDOT Number?


A US (DOT) number is an abbreviation for the United States Department of Transportation Number. The DOT Number is used by the FMSCA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which assigns a certain number to commercial vehicles.


What is Considered a Commercial Vehicle?


A commercial vehicle is any vehicle transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce. The weight classification of a commercial vehicle is a GVWR of 10,000 lbs or greater. 


Who needs a USDOT Number?


If you are transporting passengers or hauling cargo interstate (out of state) you need to get a USDOT Number. In some states this also applies for commercial vehicles which operate intrastate (inside your home state). 

How often do I have to Renew?


Your DOT Number is permanent.
